Abstract

The Piperaceae species Piper bowiei, P. caldense, P. carniconnectivum and P. permucronatum have pendant fruits as common morphological characteristics. Thus, their extracts were analyzed by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance and submitted to chemometric analysis by PCA (principal component analysis) and HCA (hierarchical cluster analysis) in order to get a differentiation between species and to observe their possible similarities. Based on the results obtained in a preliminary analysis the phytochemical studies were carried out on their crude extracts in order to identify their major constituents. The study allowed the identification of thirteen compounds, being four meroterpenes and nine flavonoids, six of which were described for the first time. Biological activity assays were performed taking into account the potential activities reported for similar compounds. (AU)
