Abstract

This research investigated the positions taken by the intellectual Otto Maria Carpeaux in his journalistic work in Brazil between the 1940s and 1960s. His performance both in literary criticism and in the analysis of international politics allowed us to understand under the analytical key of transition and historical processuality the trajectory of Karpfen/Carpeaux and which instruments of sociability he used to insert himself in different networks of cultural production, at different moments of his trajectory between Vienna and Rio de Janeiro. This research started from a hypothesis found in different sectors of the cultural field of the 1940s, 50s and 60s, such as literary criticism and the press, the reorganization of intellectual sectors and the constitution of cultural resistance to the military dictatorship established after -Coup of 1964. Thus, the impact of Carpeaux's critical production between the 1930s and 50s on his militant activities in the 1960s was analyzed. Based on the analysis of several primary sources, such as newspapers and magazines, it was concluded that Catholicism and the Baroque were continuous attributes, but modified from Austria until the end of his life in exile. Karpfen's Catholic-Baroque ideology would find a Latin American baroque ethos, however specifically Brazilian, from which this author could promote a review and self-criticism of his values and ideas over the course of two decades. Therefore, from what has been investigated, we can conclude that Carpeaux's journalistic work and political-militant content in the 1960s was the synthesis of a dialectic of continuities x inflections that allowed him to adapt both to his peers and to the leftist themes (AU)
