Abstract

This dissertation consists in a study on masculinity in Ancient Rome based on the literary narrative of Petronius\' Satyricon. For this purpose, the study starts by considering masculinity as part of a relational, more comprehensive classificatory system of sex/gender. In Chapter I, it is considered the characterization of masculinity in Ancient Rome based on the historiographical point of view that singles out the categories of uir and cinaedus, which are considered to express respectively the hegemonic and non-hegemonic masculinities; and homo, a third possible, yet rejected category for masculinity, which is considered as unmarked by the same historiographical tradition. This chapter ends by placing Petronius\' Satyricon, the literary narrative taken as evidence for analysis in this dissertation, in the context of the historiography of masculinity in Ancient Rome. In Chapter II, in order to better analyse it, Petronius\' Satyricon is considered from its historical and literary contexts. The Chapter III offers an analysis of all occurrences of homo, uir, and cinaedus in Petronius\' Satyricon. Finally, this study concludes that, from a more comprehensive classificatory point of view, these categories occur in such a complex way that it is possible to point out both the possibilities and the limits for theory, historiography and empiric evidence.
