Abstract

This dissertation proposes the analysis of A village Romeo and Juliet (Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe) by Gottfried Keller, one of the five novella included in the cycle Die Leute von Seldwyla (1856). It is a work of Poetic Realism and has a great symbolic weight, which raises questions regarding the realist aesthetics of the mid-nineteenth century and to what extent realist and symbolic representations interact. To support the study, the criteria of German realist aesthetics and contributions from the novella theory are resumed in order to observe how this symbolic potential manifests itself through the Leitmotive (leitmotifs), one of the main artifices of the German novella. In accordance with the principles of Poetic Realism and certain specificities of Gottfried Keller\'s work it is also sought to investigate what function the Leitmotiv acquires in attempting to poetically signify, albeit in an artificial manner, the increasingly common contingent events of the modern way of life that had begun to emerge in the mid-nineteenth century (AU)
