Abstract

The interpretation of diagnostic imaging tests in reptiles is still considered a challenge for many, making it necessary to know the anatomical and pathophysiological peculiarities of each species, in addition to the need to extrapolate information from domestic animals. Therefore, the aim of this study was to perform diagnostic imaging tests in reptiles of the order Squamata in order to describe the topography and characteristics of the organs. Tomographic and radiographic examinations of healthy snakes (Boa constrictor and Piton molurus) and lizards (Salvator merianae and Iguana iguana) were performed to evaluate the lower respiratory tract. In snakes, the right lung was larger, with the left lung varying in size between the two species, being more developed in Pitons molurus. The lizards had a larger left lung compared to the right one, with a difference in conformation between Salvator merianae and Iguana iguana. A descriptive analysis of the ultrasound images of the liver and gallbladder of snakes (Boa constrictor, Python molurus, Epicrates crassus) and lizards (Iguana iguana, Salvator marianae, and Eublepharis mucularius) was also performed. In snakes, an elongated hepatic lobe with little granulated and slightly hypoechogenic parenchyma was identified, with the caudal vena cava centrally located. The gallbladder is located distant from the liver, with an oval shape, homogeneous anechoic content in lumen, thin and regular walls. In lizards, the right portion of the liver was larger than the left, with a coarse and hypoechogenic echotexture parenchyma. The gallbladder was located on the right aspect of the liver, with an oval shape in most species and homogeneous anechoic content in lumen, thin and regular walls. (AU)
