Abstract

In this masters thesis, we aim to analyze the applicability of the documentary in urban discussions and readings. Based on a systemic understanding, we propose the study and exploration of the audiovisual in order to identify potentialities of the use of image and sound in the interpretation of cities, not only by professionals, but also by their inhabitants. We also intend to explore the production of narratives that favor the emergence of ideas from socio-spatial interrelationships and the development of practices that contribute to the dynamic transformation and urban spatiality from the construction of collective modes of understanding. Envisioning the documentary as an transdisciplinary idea, we propose to analyze its influence on socio-urban studies from the idea of documentary ecology. In order to do so, we take visual anthropology and, more specifically, the work of Jean Rouch regarding the use of audiovisual as a means of understanding otherness. Recognizing the limits and potential of this intersection, we seek to broaden the debate from the study of Participatory Video and contemporary audiovisual methodologies of collective and collaborative production. Then, we systematize and discuss Brazilian experiences in order to understand the use of audiovisual media by different social groups within the countrys urban centers. Soon after, we propose conducting experiments within this research, with the objective of verifying the ideas and procedures in the field of Architecture and Urbanism. Finally, we reflect on the topics addressed, focusing on the potential of documentary in the context of urban studies. This work is developed at Nomads.usp - Center for the Study of Interactive Housing, linked to the Postgraduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism of the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo IAU-USP.
