Abstract

In order to attain optimal contral of the blood pressure dietary sodium restriction has been recommended but little is known about its effect on plasma lipids. The latter was investigated by measuring plasma lipids and lipoprotein composition in the fasting state and after an oral fat load test (40 g/m2) in moderately hypertensive subjects (n=20), mean age of 54 years old, BMI 26.7 Kg/m2, on a normal sodium content diet (150 mmol/day), during 1 week, as compared to a low sodium diet (<60 mmol/day), during 3 weeks. The low sodium diet reduced the blood pressure as expected and didn\'t change BMI and hematocrit values, but elicited an elevation of the plasma triacilglyceride concentration in the fasting and in post prandial phases due to an increase of VLDL-triacilglycerides. Furthermore, the subgroup of participants (n = 14) that reached optimal blood pressure values the AUC-TAG concentration increased significantly. Present study suggests that by raising plasma concentrations of atherogenic lipoproteins a low salt diet may attenuate the beneficial effect on the cardiovascular protection elicited by the reduction of the blood pressure values.
