Abstract

This work aims to do a historical-sociological investigation of the participation of women in the music scene in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century. We found a total of 314 women musicians working professionally as piano and singing teachers, performers and composers. We found records of 637 of their compositions, of which we had access to 273 scores. It is necessary to review the history of Brazilian female musicians because, although they existed, they were not recognized. In light of this historical erasure, we sought to answer the following questions: under what conditions did they establish their careers? What kind of production did they dedicate themselves to? Why do we have so little information about them? The 19th-century Rio de Janeiro press was our main locus of research, to which we applied the keyword method, inspired by the analysis of Raymond Williams. From this method, we gathered biographical information about these women musicians. We discussed in more depth the trajectories of three composers: Amélia de Mesquita (1866-1954), Luiza Leonardo (1859-1934), and Viúva Guerreiro (1858-1936), however, throughout the work, other biographical plots are discussed to compose the analysis. We understand that this group of women artists constitutes a sample that reveals a common way of life within the professional field of music. In short, the immediate effort was to understand the reasons for the erasure of these women musicians and restitute their due place in history (AU)
