Abstract

Medical narratives about child care in Brazil began to appear in the press in the 19th century. In the theses at the conclusion of the course at the Faculty of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro, in the publications of specialized journals, in the manuals and medical treatises translated into Portuguese since the end of the 18th century and in medical textbooks, the treatment of young children was a persistent theme. Clinicians advocated that childhood, due to its particularities, demanded different attention from that given to adulthood. Considering this varied documentation, from the first medical journals published in the Brazilian capital – from 1808 – to the last medical theses presented before the creation of the first pediatrics course in Brazil – in 1882 –, this study seeks to question why and how the advent of clinical interest in the wellbeing and health of children in Rio de Janeiro. From three aspects considered necessary for the care of infants, illnesses, food and clothing, the aim of the study is the prescriptions and medical descriptions about the parameters to generate and raise healthy children throughout the 19th century. What did academics say about childbirth and care in the first years of life? How did these first regulations help to build a clinical specialty based on children? (AU)
