Abstract

The present study is based on the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which address issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. In Brazil, the study of pesticide chemistry stands out due to the importance of agriculture and the fact that the country is one of the largest pesticide consumers in the world. Therefore, we conducted a corpus-based analysis of the denominative variation of pesticide names in English and Brazilian Portuguese, with emphasis on organophosphate pesticides, which have been associated with public health problems. We concluded that, in Portuguese, the number of variants is proportionally higher due to the lack of standardization. Additionally, we showed how common names pose specific challenges for translation, causing Chemistry researchers to mobilize their knowledge of the nomenclature system to propose translations that may be influenced by their beliefs about the functioning of language. We highlighted the importance of transdisciplinary work for a deeper understanding of the object and emphasized the significance of the human factor in the use of Natural Language Processing tools. Finally, we presented a glossary designed to assist Chemistry students and specialized translators in their text productions. (AU)
