Abstract

Agile methods have impacted software development by providing changes in the way software is developed. These methods encourage tacit knowledge sharing within the team. However, they provide few recommendations about how to cope with inter-team knowledge sharing. Inter-team tacit knowledge sharing is important because it allows to scale individual experiences, abilities and skills across agile teams|reuse successful practices, learn from past mistakes, and prevent recurring issues, by incorporating knowledge into the organization\2019s work processes. This thesis investigates how agile software organizations share knowledge across teams and reach its effectiveness. Therefore, a series of studies were performed in corporate environments according to the following order: a qualitative study in four agile organizations from different contexts and business domains, which resulted in a conceptual model|two quantitative studies responded by members of national and international agile organizations, which validated and expanded the understanding of the conceptual model|and lastly, a qualitative study in three agile organizations that foster a favorable context for inter- team knowledge sharing, which allowed the refinement of the conceptual model. These studies enhanced the conceptual model, which is the main contribution of this thesis. This model explains how the adoption of practices for inter-team knowledge sharing is triggered by stimuli, facilitated by enablers, and selected by purposes that are intentions to share knowledge. Its effectiveness is measured by five components and influenced by organizational conditions. A recommendation guide to the practices\2019 adoption is also provided as a practical contribution of this thesis. (AU)
