Abstract

In this research, I aim to investigate the presence of historical and dialectical materialism in The Second Sex, by Simone de Beauvoir. I will firstly present the author's commentary upon biology, psychoanalysis and historical materialism in a manner to make it evident, on the one hand, the theoretical insufficiency of ahistorical methods taken individually and, on the other hand, the materialist tenor of her stance regarding the employment of these three methods as a theoretical support to understand women's alterity. Secondly, focusing on the tension between Beauvoir's sometimes idealistic and sometimes materialistic posture in The Second Sex, I will argue that the materialist aspect of the concept of situation is solid evidence that the author's approach is more Marxist than Hegelian. From this, I will attempt to demonstrate that the use which the author undertakes of hegelian dialectics to understand the relation between men and women surpasses the limits of hegelian idealism, moving toward the materialistic turn which Marx took as he sublated dialectics of the Spirit. Finally, I will present the analysis that the author undertakes of the concrete situation of French women in the capitalist society of the XX Century, pointing to the dimension that the author's materialist position occupies, through the following antagonistic pairs: capitalism and socialism; marriage and work; alienation and freedom (AU)
