Assistance to people with diabetes in two Basics Health Units in Piracicaba - SP

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most important world health problems at present. There is a tendency in its occurrence in the next few years and this will generate the necessity of modifying and intensifying the care given to people have diabetes. Objectives: General: To assess the assistance given to people with diabetes in two Basics Health Units (BHUs) in Piracicaba - SP. Methods: The kind of assistance offered by BHUs to people with diabetes was evaluated with the help of structure questionnaire that was applied for an employee of each BHU. A characterization of the population of both BHUs was done through individual interviews and a questionnaire. The first 15 people interviewed in each BHU were invited to participate in focal group to analyze their representation facing diabetes, its treatment and the attention offered by BHUs. The health professionals representation facing diabetes care were identified through individual interviews with a help of a structure questionnaire. In order to join and to evaluate the qualitative data the \"Discourse of the Colletive Subject\" technique was used. Results: Different levels of sensibility and prepare of health professionals and the lack of multiprofessional staff were observed in both BHUs. The population of users in both BHUs was, in majority, overweight and obese women, above 60, with both low income and education. It was observed through biochemical tests that the majority of the population has a bad diabetes control. The users of BHU 2 were satisfied and the users of BHU 1 were unsatisfied with the service offered. Conclusions: The BHU 2 had better conditions for diabetes care than BHU 1 although both had deficiencies. There are different levels of sensibilization and prepare of health professionals in the same staff. The most of population was overweight and obese and has bad glicemic control. There were not differences in BHUs populations characteristics. The users of BHU 2 were satisfied and the users of BHU1 unsatisfied with the attention offered. (AU)
