Abstract

This work reports on a study of the spatial heterogeneity of the phytoplankton community produced by the different environmental conditions found on two days of analysis (30 June 97 and 22 January 1998) at the Salto Grande reservoir in Americana, SP, Brazil. Located in a region of extensive economic and industrial development, this reservoir is a recipient, upstream, of untreated sewage and industrial waste. Two sample collections were made at 25 stations along the reservoir to identify the existence of patterns in the spatial distribution of the phytoplankton community and, thus, propose which the main factors for this distribution are. The most significant differences in regard to this distribution were found between the reservoir\'s entrance stations, i.e, those that are directly impacted by the Atibaia river, where the CHLOROPHYCEAE dominated during the sampling periods. The CYANOPHYCEAE class was found to dominate at the stations with more lentic characteristics. The Microcystis aeruginosa species was the greatest biomass contributor in terms of biovolume during both sampling periods, while Monoraphidium grif.fithii was the dominating species of the CHLOROPHYCEAE class. The factors of compartmentalization obtained were the morphometry and the reservoir\' s trophic level (AU)
