Abstract

Phytoplankton and phycoperiphyton microorganisms are sensitive and deeply affected by environmental disturbances, so they are indicators of ecological quality. The changes in community structure can be predictive, because they are representative of environmental conditions. Thus, knowledge about the biodiversity and ecology of phytoplankton and phycoperiphyton can contribute to development of predictive models of algal bloom and/or eutrophication. In this sense, this proposal aims to integrate information on physical, chemical and biological characteristics of water with the structure of phytoplankton and phycoperiphyton, to identify guilds, functional groups and trophic status indicator species. The study also intends to identify the pattern of spatial and temporal variability of communities. The sampling was done upstream of the dam and the area during dry and rainy period. Sampling the water column was defined primarily by the mixing regime and, secondly, the light regime, as sampling protocol. The variables physical, chemical and biological water were analyzed. The structure of phycoperiphyton and will be evaluated by phytoplankton species composition, density and algal biovolume, biological indices and functional groups. The proposal is for the country by pioneering joint approach of algal communities in different habitats (periphyton and phytoplankton) and scales, as the local scale (littoral and pelagic), temporal (dry and rainy) and spatial (basin), with a view to bioindication. The study intends to contribute to a better understanding of biodiversity and ecology of phytoplankton and phycoperiphyton tropical regions, as well as its use in the diagnosis of the ecological quality of reservoirs, especially in the reservoirs of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo included in the project thematic (Fapesp 2009/53898-9).
