Abstract

The expansion of slum quartes in Rio de Janeiro marked the transfiguration of city during the twentieth century, hastening di verse types of interventions, from sumary removal to consolidated politics for urbanization of these neighborhoods. This work carries through na analysis of the different public politics of intervention in the poorest areas of Rio de Janeiro, with the objective to stand out the experience of the Urbanization of Brás de Pina as precursory of a nowadays well established public politic. The analysis of this experience - accomplished by the group Quadra, archictects Carlos Nelson Ferreira dos Santos, Sylvia Wanderely and Sueli Azevedo and a governmental agency, the CODESCO - allows to observe that it became a reference for posterior public politics of intervention in slum quarters and influenced the professional career of its participants.
