Abstract

This study intends to develop a methodology to determine the influence of the land use in the water quality. The study area comprises the middle reach Pardo River (SP) and the temporal analysis in the period of 1985 to 1997. Initially, data of the non point and point sources were obtained in the water agencies. In addition, the Geographic Information System allowed to digitalize, manipulate the data and maps overlay. Satellite images were employed to update the land use situation. The thematic maps obtained and satellite images were overlayed resulting critical areas maps related to the sources river pollution. The data analysis enabled to determine that the urban expansion influenced the rise of the point sources contributions and; the sugar-cane expansion increased the agricultural input application and slashed natural vegetation, inclusive riparian zones. In spite of distinct criterions used to generate the critical areas maps, the more criticals areas were coincidents indicating that they need more attention. The application of the QUAL2E mathematic model indicated the contribution of the diffuse sources, confirming the influence of the land use in the water quality. The links between land and water management are strengthened and it is concluded that the land use planning is very important to assure the sustainable utilization of the water resources viewing all the needs (AU)
