Abstract

This work presents a contribution on modeling, simulation and control of blood glucose in diabetic patients. From engineering standpoint, a new closed-loop control environment is proposed, that should be adequate for clinical application on hospitalized patients. A new simulation model for the diabetic patient is presented, from an initial physiologic model developed for a health subject. Furthermore, the clinical use of a minimal model is proposed and new linearized models are identified. In this simulation environment, that precedes the clinical tests phase, a new proposal of predictive control application is validated, with promising results if compared with those related in the literature. The results shown here were obtained with application of SISO (Single-Input-Single-Output) closed-loop control (glicemic reading and insulin infusion), but new results with MIMO (Multiple-Input/Multiple-Output) control are in advance (glicemic readings on two different locations and glucose and insulin infusions).
