Abstract

This research deals with the relationship between lifestyles, political position takings and the demarcation of symbolic boundaries between the cultural fraction of the middle classes in the city of São Paulo. In line with the approach that has been called Cultural class analysis, cultural class fractions are defined as the set of agents belonging to the same social class who depend more on cultural capital than on economic capital for the reproduction of their social position and for the demarcation of their status hierarchies. In the case of the cultural fraction of the middle classes in São Paulo, it is presented as being composed of individuals inserted in intermediate positions in occupations related to science, art, academia, cultural production, teaching, journalism, social assistance, and some liberal professions. The main objective of the research is to understand the specific effects of class fraction on position taking and identity constructions. The working hypothesis is that among this class fraction it would be possible to find positions taken strongly marked by the effort to value cultural capital and deny economic capital, which would incline agents towards the demarcation of a symbolic boudaries that opposes them to the economic fraction of the same class. To test this hypothesis, the particularities of the positions taken by these agents in the domains of political stances and lifestyles are observed, which is done through the application of questionnaires on political positions and lifestyles with twenty seven individuals belonging, mostly, to the cultural fraction of the middle classes of the city of São Paulo, and carrying out in-depth interviews on the same topics with twenty three of them. The data produced shows that, in the case of political stances, the integration in the structural positions typical of cultural fractions tends to be marked by demands for left-wing political positions, which, in turn, tend to be the most advantageous for valuing the cultural capital compared to economic capital. Likewise, for lifestyles, the typical positions of cultural fractions are also identified by cultural practices and tastes oriented towards the valorization of legitimized culture, equally strategic for the valorization of cultural capital as a criterion of social hierarchy. In this way, the results point to the structuring effects of cultural capital on the cultural fraction, tilting it towards the valorization of cultural capital, denial of economic capital and, therefore, towards the demarcation of a symbolic boundaries against the economic fraction. However, as an unintentional effect of this identity construction, strategies for valuing cultural capital still operate to restrict the entry of popular classes into intermediate cultural positions (AU)
