Abstract

This dissertation aims to comprehend and discuss the movement of school departure and return among women who are students in Youth and Adult Education in the northwest region of the city of Campinas, São Paulo. To achieve this, we conducted qualitative research with ethnographic immersion in an experimental Youth and Adult Education school in the northwest region of Campinas. In addition, interviews were conducted with 15 students who participated in the project during the year 2022. In the course of this work, we understand that various factors acted as impediments to the continuity of the educational process for these women, such as the need to work, parental prohibition, difficulty in accessing school, lack of resources to stay in school, learning difficulties, and loss of interest in the school institution. Furthermore, marriages marked by violence and restrictions, as well as a lack of division of domestic responsibilities such as caring for the home and children, emerged in the life experiences of these students as reasons that hindered their return to school. However, when these women, through their struggle strategies, manage to access school through Youth and Adult Education, we observe that this space becomes a welcoming environment and provides opportunities for accessing rights that were denied to these individuals. It is worth mentioning that, for this dissertation, the main theoretical references were drawn from the educational studies of Paulo Freire, the gender definitions provided by Joan Scott and Judith Butler, and productions on intersectionality by Patricia Hill Collins and Sirma Bilge, as well as national references on the subject. Furthermore, WE base this work on the discursive nature of experience and the politics of its construction within the school space, according to bell hooks, Joan Scott, Jorge Larrosa Bondía, and other works contributing to this reflection (AU)
