Abstract

This dissertation had the purpose of presenting two scientific articles. Article 1: The aim of the present study was to validate the Vectra H2® stereophotogrammetry system for analyzing facial anthropometry in children. 30 participants had 19 used anatomical landmarks marked, so that 14 linear measurements were quantified. Initially, measurements were quantified using a digital caliper. Participants then had their face photographed using stereophotogrammetry equipment and evaluated using the same system\'s software. Pearson\'s and Spearman\'s radiance coefficient tests were applied. All 14 measurements showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). The Tr-G, G-Pn, G-Sn, Ene-Che, End-Chd measurements show very strong (r values between 0.9485 to 0.9026), while Ald-Ale, Exe-Che, Sn- Ls, Sn -Pg, Ls-Li, Exd-Chd, Chd-Che present moderate samples (r values between 0.8821 and 0.7094) and Acd-Ace and Cphe-Cphd appear moderate (r=.5790 and r= .6982). The Vectra H2® facial stereophotogrammetry system proved to be a validated and reliable method for analyzing facial anthropometry in children. Article 2: The purpose of this study was to carry out a cross-sectional analysis of the anthropometry of the face of children with and without cleft lip and palate. 70 children were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 (G1) children with cleft lip and palate; and Group 2 (G2) children without cleft lip and palate. The 3D image acquisition of the facial surface was performed using stereophotogrammetry equipment. 19 anatomical reference points were delimited so that 14 linear measurements were quantified. The measurements of the upper third of the face, the distance from the exocanthus to the commissure, the upper labial cutaneous length, the length between the subnasal point and the pogonion and the length of the upper and lower labial finding are significantly greater in children without the anomaly. However, the distance between the glabella and the nasal tip, the glabella and the subnasal, the alar width, the width of the alar curvature and the width of the philtrum were greater in the group with cleft lip and palate. It is concluded that children with surgically treated cleft lip and palate, aged between 5 and 6 years, present differences in facial morphology when compared to children of the same age without cleft lip and palate.
