Abstract

Studying museum collections is challenging, mainly because they consist of decontextualized pieces that often lack documentation. Objects, when placed in museums, as noted by Menezes (1980), see a reduction in their utilitarian value; however, it can be argued that they remain in use within an institutional discourse. Seeking to highlight this institutional use, we will ad dress eighty-four Egyptian pieces from the Museum of Biblical Archaeology at the Adventist University of São Paulo (MAB-UNASP), encompassing over nine temporal periods and twelve themes. Our goal is to place these pieces in a discussion about their current context, governed by a religious discourse, employing three methods: a theoretical discussion covering reuse theories, the formation of collections, and the construction of the \"Ancient Egypt\"; quantitative analysis through graphs; and qualitative analysis through a detailed catalog. Thus, in addition to offering a fresh perspective on collections, we aim to enhance understanding of how the institution approaches and communicates cultural heritage, providing a critical analy sis that goes beyond the limitations of limited documentation and decontextualization of the pieces.
