Abstract

The first objective of this paper is to explore the concept of the public sphere based on the work of German sociologist Niklas Luhmann. In his writings, we can observe some important considerations about the public sphere that, however, were not developed in depth by the author to form a concept of great magnitude. We therefore propose to develop the concept further, exploring its latent state and relating it to other concepts of greater scope from Luhmann\'s theoretical framework, namely: contingency, differentiation and observation. This conceptual development is not justified in itself. As a second objective of the thesis, we will present and develop the following argument: from the moment in which the reflection on the public sphere based on Luhmann\'s theory advances, a specific phenomenon and social problem emerges, which we call the \"representative asymmetry of modern society\". It consists of the following: functional systems, according to Luhmann, are presented to the various observers of society through the system of mass media, and through their respective public spheres. However, the mass media give preference to the representation of only some of these spheres (namely, politics, economics and sports), largely ignoring the others. The problem posed by this phenomenon manifests itself in the sense that this asymmetrical representation leads to the construction, by social observers, of an image of society that is highly simplified and centralized in these three systems, an image that asserts itself in a direction contrary to the systemic and communicative polycentrism that constitutes modern society. Everything that people and organizations, as observers, consider as relevant social issues or problems is simply a communicative preference pre-ordained by the mass media (AU)
