Abstract

Thus, we have presented, initially, a detailed study about the historic and sociological aspects related to the dressing code of the 19th century. Thereafter, we have inquired about the work of such writers as Honoré de Balzac, Émile Zola and Nikolai Gogol for references to such theme. The aim of such inquiry was not only to exhibit the importance of the theme itself ¿ which is dealt with by the former-mentioned Brazilian novelist in great brilliancy ¿ but also to analyze the significance of the mentioning of these objects, and this will be, further ahead, of upmost importance to the understanding of the references of this nature in the work of Machado de Assis. Conclusively, when discussing the clothing aspects in the work of Machado de Assis, we detailed the most important aspects critics have already analyzed in these particular representations. Therefore, we pointed out the core arguments directed towards this theme by the experts Eugênio Gomes, Rymundo Faoro, Alfredo Bosi and Gilda de Mello e Souza. This analysis has allowed us to evaluate carefully the intricate meanings assigned by Machado to these objects. For this reason, we elected from two books of short stories from the early stages of the literary production of Machado de Assis - Contos Fluminenses and Histórias da Meia Noite ¿ and three other books of short stories from his matured literary life ¿ Papéis Avulsos, Várias Histórias and Histórias sem data ¿ the most representative displays of this theme. There are allusions to elements such as dresses, overcoats, hats, elegant shoes, amongst several others; and let it be noted that the presence of these objects is not here to simply characterize the "reality" of the time being, but so to a much broader significance, and they do acquire such significance in the work of Machado de Assis. Summing up, after evaluating all the meanings related to these elements in all the cited texts, we pointed out some particularities in the representation of the dressing codes in each one of the production periods of Machado de Assis. Thus, an extensive analysis on the theme was performed; offering the reader a much more precise picture of the complex representation of the dressing codes produced by one of the greatest Brazilian writers (AU)
