Abstract

This thesis aims to conduct an analysis of theater criticism, published in Rio de Janeiro newspapers between 1890 and 1900, before the tense discussions about the "decadence" of the national theater in the brazilian intellectual and innovations raised in the dramatic literature, especially in the gender drama. The theme of "decadence" of the national theater is in some way related to the advent of the new drama that emerged in fin de siècle, as both relate to the genre "serious", represented by the drama. Intellectuals and writers such as Arthur Azevedo, Oscar Guanabrino, Valentim Magalhães, Luís de Castro, Urbano Duarte, among others, wrote and opined about the dramas of authors considered reformers (Henrik Ibsen, Hermann Sudermann, Ivan Turgenev), through the mounting shown in major theaters in the Rio de Janeiro. In addition, this study proposes to draw a general profile of journalistic theater criticism, taking into account the variations and transformations undergone by this type of text (more specifically the gender) at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from a collection of performance reviews of the genre called "serious (AU)
