Abstract

The presence of novels in Rio de Janeiro, in the first half of the nineteenth century, can be studied through the advertisement published in three of the major newspapers in Rio de Janeiro: Correio Brasiliense (W. Lewis: London, 1808-1822), Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro (Royal Printing: Rio de Janeiro, 1808-1822) and Jornal do Commercio (Pierre Plancher: Rio de Janeiro, 1827-1844). In a period of increasing access to periodicals, booksellers began to use them to make public the books available in their bookstores. The analysis of this material provides information about the most active booksellers, about the most advertised books, about the materiality of those books and their prices. It is also possible to exam the criteria used to evaluate the novels and the strategies employed to convince the possible clients to buy a book. It is also possible to observe the close relationship between advertisement and literary criticism that began to be published in periodicals. Therefore, the analysis of novels' advertisement may help to understand the process of diffusion and consolidation of the genre in Brazil (AU)
