Abstract

This research aims at investigating by means of case studies in the town of Itaquaquecetuba, São Paulo, the reading practices, the meanings attached to reading, the identities as readers and the repertoires of popular educators who are involved in programs geared to minimize illiteracy among adults and the young. The demand for these educators is commonplace in Brazil. Presently, there is a large number of such programs set by governments, private institutions, universities and other social organizations taking place simultaneously at both local and national levels. Most educators possess a level of schooling that vary from the very basic to more advanced college degrees, and take upon themselves the important task of teaching young people and adults with a low level of schooling to read and write. They widen these groups¿ repertoires and social practices in the use of written language. From a practical point of view, this research seeks to produce a set of indicators towards the design of programs and strategies of formation of educators such as these, as well as to contribute to the construction of a descriptive and analytical picture of the basis that structure and sustain their action, something that has been somewhat neglected in the area of linguistic education research (AU)
