Abstract

The northeast coast of Brazil is characterized by the presence of a vegetation of "tabuleiros costeiros" (on deposits of the "Barreiras Group"), mangroves and restingas (a name used for the vegetation complex that occurs on Holocene sands of the Brazilian coast). The restingas are not a homogeneous phytophysiognomic unit, since the substrate and variations in salinity are influencing the plant communities on the coast, thus there exists a great floristic and structural variation. The flora of restingas has been extensively studied mainly in southeastern and southern Brazil, but several states in the Northeast and North still have their restingas virtually unknown. This is the case of Sergipe, where only were performed sporadic collections that not resulted in published periodical papers. Although many species of restingas occur throughout the Brazilian coast, there are characteristics peculiar to each location, thus justifying studies in little known parts of the north-northeast of Brazil. The main objective of this work was the creation of a Flora for a stretch of the north coast of Sergipe, between the municipalities of Barra dos Coqueiros and Santo Amaro das Brotas. We developed the work to be published in two ways: traditional, in the form of book or articles in periodicals, and electronics, with all the content available on a website. The species were photographed and collected in the usual way, and identified with the aid of floras, taxonomic revisions and consultation of specialists. We edited the photographs with the softwares Picasa and CorelDraw. The website of the Flora was built entirely with the BRAHMS software, and for the interactive keys with multiple entries we used the software Lucid 3.3. During our study we collected 271 species of vascular plants, most of these in open and closed shrub physiognomies. The species are distributed in 192 genera and 82 families, the most representative are Fabaceae (30 spp.), Cyperaceae (23 spp.), Rubiaceae (11 spp.), Euphorbiaceae (10 spp.) and Myrtaceae (9 spp.). These are generally the families richest in species in northeastern restingas. The stretch of restinga studied presents a high species richness compared to that reported from other parts of the northeast. It is not possible to evaluate whether this is due to the lower collection effort undertaken in other studies or the intrinsic characteristics of the area where our work was done. The dissemination of taxonomic results through eFloras certainly has many advantages, but it is necessary to take measures aiming at accuracy and an ongoing maintenance of these websites, thus stimulating the creation of a greater number of eFloras. The use of the software Lucid 3.3 for the construction of the interactive keys with multiple entries shows advantages as compared to the usual methods for the construction of keys, since the interface is intuitive, and provides a number of facilities for carrying out the work, especially as regards the management of information on characters and character states of the sampled species. The realization of these floristic studies may support studies to clarify the biogeographic relationships of the restingas (AU)
