Abstract

This work aimed to study the mathematical modeling of enzymatic hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse subjected to three types of pretreatments (alkaline hydrogen peroxide, phosphoric acid + sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide). The kinetic model of simultaneous saccharification and fermentation developed by PHILIPPIDIS et al. (1992, 1993) and PHILIPPIDIS and HATZIS (1997) was adapted to represent the experimental data of the batch process of enzymatic hydrolysis of 3% of dry sugarcane bagasse pretreated with alkaline hydrogen peroxide. From the model developed was possible to obtain concentration profiles of the main components of the process. The simultaneous estimation of kinetic parameters of the mathematical model was performed using the Pikaia genetic algorithm (GA). The data used in the estimation procedure describe the profiles of glucose as function of enzymes concentration (1.67 - 30 FPU/g dry pretreated biomass and 7.33 - 50 CBU/g dry pretreated biomass) and residence time (0-72 h) during hydrolysis. Plackett-Burman (PB) designs were used to identify the kinetic parameters with the higher influence on the dynamic behavior of the process variables. In the step of re-estimation of parameters experimental data of glucose for bagasse pretreated with phosphoric acid + sodium hydroxide and bagasse pretreated with calcium hydroxide (lime) were considered. The methodology of parameter estimation using genetic algorithm was able to predict accurately the experimental data set of glucose for bagasse pretreated with alkaline hydrogen peroxide. For bagasse pretreated with phosphoric acid + sodium hydroxide the updated model was able to reproduce accurately both the data set used in the parameter estimation procedure and the data used for model validation. As for the data of bagasse pretreated with lime the model failed to describe some experimental data (AU)
