Rural industry in São Paulo: characterization and perspectives of development

Abstract

Recently, the debate about the rural area development has received significantly contributions that show the increasing importancy of non-agricultural activities in compararion to agricultural ones. In order to contribute to this debate, we have analyzed the available information related to the so-called Rural Industry ¿ a non-agricultural activity. It¿s rare, in Brazil, studies that manifest the spacial, economic and social dimentions of the Rural Industry. In this context, the goal of this study was to provide a Rural Industry¿s characterization in São Paulo, trying to identify the types of Rural Industries existent, the most important activities and the amount of money produced by this segment in the cities of São Paulo state. Besides, the study has also aimed to evaluate the Rural Industry importancy as a defining element to the cities¿variety, according to their social and economic characteristics. It has also identified the cities¿ postures according to a bigger or smaller presence of Rural Industry. The study, has shown, amoung other facts, that the activities related to Rural Industry are important to the development of the rural area¿s social and economic, because they are strongly present in the units of the agricultural production; they are also important to the internal market supply, and also, the nometary contribution from these activities and the jobs opennings increase are really significant. It¿s important to say that the principal income from the Rural Industry to São Paulo is that one originated from the coffee processing (toasted and grounded), followed by other activities such as: milk (cheeses, yogurt, etc), sugar cane (booze, ¿rapadura¿= raw brow sugar, etc), meat (sausages, sun-dryed meat, etc) and others (oils, farming and cattle-raising products). All these facts show that the stimulation to the activities related to Rural Industry may have important contribution to the development of the brazilian rural area, its income and occupancy (AU)
