Several agricultural areas under no-tillage system (NT) in Brazil present soils with low pH values and higher aluminum content. In spite of the apparently unfavorable condition to agriculture of such areas, high yields and lack of responses of crops to lime application have been observed, probably, because of aluminum chemistry in soils under no-tillage. Organic matter (OM) accumulation and interactions between soluble organic compounds and soil minerals, favor aluminum complexation, reducing Al activity and toxicity to plants. The objective of this work was studying the aluminum chemistry in NT soil samples of three experiments located in Rondonópolis/MT, Ponta Grossa/PR, and Botucatu/SP, and is correlation it with amount and quality of organic matter, mineralogical constitution of the soil and crop yield. Aluminum behavior was studied in different pH values obtained after surface liming. Chemical speciation of Al in the soil solution, and separation and identification of the organic ligants of higher effect in the reduction of Al toxicity were carried out. Aluminum complexation for OM was studied for CuCl2 0.5 mol L-1 extraction, and for KCl 1 mol L-1 extraction after OM oxidation for dry combustion or wet combustion (H2O2 30% or NaOCl 6%). Most Al in soil solutions under NT was complexed to organic anions or dissolved organic carbon (Al-DOC), decreasing Al toxicity to the plants. Al-DOC specie represented about 70 to 80% of total aluminum at pH < 5,0 and about 30 to 40% at pH > 5,0. The major part of Al-COD (about 75 to 80%) was complexed to low molecular organic acids in the soil solution. In the Typic Haplustox of Rondonópolis/MT, in which pH value and aluminum content were low, 96% of the exchangeable aluminum was complexed by OM, while in Rhodic Hapludox of Ponta Grossa/PR only 75%. The Rhodic Haplustox of Rondonópolis/MT, in which the content of Al extracted by CuCl2 (Al organic complexed) was higher, showed the larger humification degree, following by Rhodic Kandiudult of Botucatu/SP, and Rhodic Hapludox of Ponta Grossa/PR. Soybean and rice yields were not influenced by liming in all places, either in 2001/2002 or 2002/2003 cropping seasons. (AU) | |
