Abstract

The members of the Deliberative Council of Pirelli-Masp collection of photographs have been defending the memory of the Brazilian photograph. They have been using their speeches to show their concern about the photograph memory and to save them as a historical document. This issue is approached in parallel with the didatic and artistic actions accomplished at the Masp museum around the photograph collection. Thus, it is possible to notice that the concern of the members of the Deliberative Council of the collection in conserving the memory of the Brazilian photograph is a result from a strategy that precedes the collection itself linked to the cultural politics that Pietro Maria Bardi tried to institute along the history of the museum. However, to light up the complexity of this theme, it is intended to review all theses strategies. Starting from the recovery of the own history of the photograph in São Paulo during the 20th century, in which the photographic speech constituted by Masp is a structural element. The photograph will be recovered, having as a context not only the cultural-artistic scene of São Paulo but also the uncoiling of the photograph in the international extent. The objective is to analyze the speeches of the members of the Deliberative Council to identify and understand the criteria used for the selection of the presented works in the referred collection. And to think on the discursive mechanisms that try, starting from the fundaments and aesthetic concepts legitimated by the history of the art, to affirm the place of the picture in a museum. To study the Collection Pirelli-Masp inside of this wider universe can bring not only new questions on the uses and functions of the picture in Brazil, but also how to insert them in Brazilian art museums.
