Abstract

Childhood is a period of life with changing meanings and values according to different time and social groups. Several branches of knowledge have contributed throughout the years searching the building-up of a special view over childhood, considering its specificities in relation to the other stages of life cycles. However, only in the last decades, researches were made crediting to children a greater participation in the transmission process and in the production of culture. The daycare, as one of the educational and children care practices in our society, has been called to be part of the new conceptions of childhood, opening space for the participation of children in the everyday life organization and in the evaluation of the services offered to them. From the point of view of the debates about the service quality received, there are few studies that bring the participation of children in the process. This present study had the target of investigating which activities, routines and spaces children like the most or the least in the institution they attend and of understanding the possibilities of this evaluation as a tool to promote better attendance quality. The survey to collect data was made in a daycare in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo State, with 22 six-year-old children, divided into three groups. The empiric material was brought up through: chat circles (group 1) and individual interviews (groups 2 and 3) about the topic my daycare; individual production of photos of what they liked the most and liked the least (groups 1, 2 and 3); chat circles about the images produced (groups 1, 2 and 3). In order to obtain additional elements to the understanding of the reasons of the choices made by the children, several observations of the activities and of the spaces photographed were made. Besides that, 9 adults were interviewed with the purpose of getting auxiliary information about their practice with the children, having the photos as motivational starters. The results point to the preference of activities oriented by free playing, with little interference of educators and shared by groups of friends. The activities and routines that they dont like are connected to control and discipline actions by the adults of the institution, and the formal activities related to the preparation for the future school life. This present study might help in the understanding of the possibilities of the listening to children, bringing a special value to the meanings which emerge when children are asked to evaluate the institutions they attend (AU)
