Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of sense produced in academic texts on foreign language teaching by the concept of subject that underlies them. Accepting the assumption that the notion of subject, although taken as evidence of sense in some discourses that constitute the theoretical field of Applied Linguistics, is at the basis of any reflection on teaching, I formulate the hypothesis that this notion produces significant differences in each theory/approach in the theorization and proposal of actions about the teacher-student relation, as well as about the theory-practice relation, i.e. the pedagogical practice. The central theoretical framework for the analysis is the reflections of Discourse Analysis as carried out in Brazil and which are based on a reading of Pêcheuxs texts, crossed by Foucault\'s reflections on knowledge and power as well as a discussion on the (im)possible dialogue with Psychoanalysis. To form the foregoing discussion, the academic papers that comprise the corpus were selected from three journals in the given study area and had as its theme the education of foreign language teachers. The analysis of the material allowed for the perception that two notions of subject are discursivized: the one that I called a sociological subject and the other named a discursive subject; each of them setting limits and a scope to the discourses they constitute. The notion of the sociological subject brought into play in Reflective Discourse produces in such a discourse a homogeneous regime both in the teacher-student relation (stated as a symmetric relation) and in the bonds between theory and practice (stated in the form of an applicability). On the other hand, the notion of the discursive subject, articulated in the fabric of the Discourse Analysis discourse on education, produces a system of heterogeneity both in the teacher-student relation (bringing to light its constitutive power games) and in the theory-practice relation, which brings in its structure the impossibility of completeness, raising a barrier that can only be crossed subjectively and singularly. The study, therefore, seems to have validated the hypothesis initially raised, allowing for the conclusion that the notion of subject is structuring of any reflection on teaching and should thus be questioned in teacher education courses.
