Abstract

The present dissertation explore the demography and slave work of from rural coffee properties from Bananal, central Paraíba River Valley (state of São Paulo, Brazil), between 1830s and 1850s, period of coffee farming expansion. The documental corpus is composed by detailed post mortem inventories from coffee farmers which made use of slave work and by habitant nominal lists (regional census), especially the ones related to the years 1817, 1822 and 1829. Through these documents, this research aims to analyze the slaveholding structure and the demographic slavery profile, to map the agrarian structure, to determine the productive capacity of agricultural unities and frame the exploration of captive workers. It intends to demonstrate the existence of a uniform demographic pattern in central Paraíba River Valley, featured by the dissemination of possession of slaves and, at the same time, by the concentration of captive property by large slaveholders, owners of 100 or more slaves. Withal, it strove to show the productive process concentration by the large slaveholders, which dominated slave laborers, the agrarian properties and the coffee plantations. (AU)
