Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Although about 20% of patients do not exhibit anti aquaporin 4 (AQP4 antibodies, there is evidence that tissue damage is more severe in patients with autoantibodies to AQP4.
