Marco Bettine is an Associate Professor III at the University of São Paulo (USP), where he works in the fields of contemporary philosophy, critical theory, legal theory, and discourse ethics, with a special focus on the work of Jürgen Habermas. He holds undergraduate degrees in Physical Education (Unicamp) and Law (PUC-Campinas), as well as a master's and a doctorate in the Sociology of Leisure from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP). He completed two postdoctoral fellowships: one at the Faculty of Sport of the University of Porto (FADEUP) and another at the Institute for Advanced Studies at USP (IEA-USP), with scholarships granted by CNPq and USP's Office of the Vice Provost for Research.He was awarded the title of Livre-Docente (Habilitation) in 2013, with the thesis "A Sociological Analysis of the Development of the Main Football Clubs in the State of São Paulo at the End of the 19th and Beginning of the 20th Century: The Influence of Urbanization, Railways, and the Tietê River." His academic work spans the fields of sports sociology, political philosophy, international relations, and the theory of communicative action, focusing on the interplay between language, law, and democracy.He has served as coordinator of both Undergraduate and Graduate Programs at USP and has participated in various interdisciplinary research networks in Brazil and abroad, with particular involvement in the Move La America Program and Angolas Ministry of Science and Technology. He has supervised 19 masters theses, 5 doctoral dissertations, 2 postdoctoral projects, and 62 funded undergraduate research projects.Among his most recent publications are the books Sociocultural Foundations of Physical Education and Sport (Edusp, 2024) and Understanding Jürgen Habermass Theory of Communicative Action (AnnaBlume/FAPESP, 2020), in addition to numerous articles and book chapters on deliberative democracy, football, and critical theory. His work has been published in both national and international journals, including Aracê, Revista Movimento, Sociologias (UFRGS), and the London Journal of Research in Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2024, he contributed to the edited volume Demarcating Social Change (Blucher) with an essay on politics, myth, and sport in the Qatar World Cup.His academic path is marked by a strong articulation between critical thought and public engagement, combining theoretical rigor, academic commitment, and a broad interdisciplinary dialogue.
