I hold a Bachelor's degree in Medicine from the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo (1981), a Master's degree in Psychiatry and Medical Psychology from the Universidade Federal de São Paulo (1993), a Master's degree in Epidemiology from the University of London (1992), a Ph.D. in Psychiatry from the University of London (1995), and a post-doctoral fellowship in the University of Bristol (2006-08). I obtained a "livre-docência" (similar to a second doctorate) in Preventive Medicine from the University of São Paulo (2002). I currently hold the position of full professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, coordinator of the Center for Population Mental Health Research at the University of São Paulo. Additionally, I am the scientific director of the National Center for Research and Innovation in Mental Health (CISM). I am a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo. I have held various significant roles, including serving as the coordinator of the Coordination of Disease Control at the Secretaria de Estado da Saúde de São Paulo (Secretary of State for Health of São Paulo) from February 2019 to October 2020. I also served as the coordinator of the Contingency Center for COVID-19 Response in the State of São Paulo from December 2020 to December 2022. Moreover, in 2022 and 2023, I was a member of the High-Level Committee for Mental Health and COVID-19 in the Americas of the Pan American Health Organization. My expertise lies in the field of Collective Health, with a focus on Psychiatric Epidemiology and Global Mental Health. I have been primarily involved in epidemiological research on psychoses, common mental disorders in primary care, and mental disorders in the elderly population.
