Dr. Niklaus Ursus Wetter holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ, 1988) and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Technology from the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN, 1993). He is currently a senior researcher at the Brazilian National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) at IPEN and a graduate professor at the University of São Paulo (USP), where he regularly teaches a course. Since 2024, he has served as the Dean of Graduate Studies for IPEN's Professional Master's Program. From 2009 to 2013, he was the Deputy Manager of IPEN's Laser and Applications Center. From 2013 to 2018, he held the position of Manager of the Laser and Applications Center at the institute and also served (from 2014 to 2020) as CEO of FAFITPE, IPENs Foundation for Technological Research and Education Support. From 2019 to 2024, he held the role of Deputy Director of Research and Internationalization Manager at IPEN. Since 2024, he has been the Research Director at IPEN.As Internationalization Manager, he implemented 14 bilateral agreements with universities and institutes worldwide, including Battelle Energy Alliance, which includes eight of the largest federal research institutions in the United States. In 2018, he organized the André Swieca Summer School and the FAPESP Advanced Science School "Laserfrontiers.com," which hosted 141 students, 40 of whom came from outside Latin America. His specialization is in laser development, covering key areas: laser resonators, diode lasers, waveguides, laser materials, lasers for various applications, and Raman spectroscopy. In 2017, he acquired, through a project funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), a multi-user Raman-TERS (AFM) system with STM and SNOM, focused on measurements and nanomaterials development. One of his research focuses is microplastics, as this field has become a significant global health concern and an environmental pollution issue.Since 2008, he has also been developing light sources in disordered materials, known as "Random Lasers," aimed at applications in optical devices. He holds four granted patents and has filed a total of 11 patent applications, along with 280 international articles with over 2850 citations and an h-index of 31 (Scopus).
