Birthplace: Brazil

Frank Nelson Crespilho is a Brazilian chemist, born in the countryside of São Paulo, with a career dedicated to the intersection of bioelectrochemistry, sustainable energy, and health. He graduated from the University of São Paulo (USP), where he also earned his master's, PhD, and habilitation (livre-docência), establishing an interdisciplinary research path with a strong focus on integrating biological systems with electroactive materials. His academic journey includes training and international collaborations at prestigious institutions such as the University of Coimbra (Portugal), California Institute of Technology Caltech (USA), Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research (Germany), Harvard University (USA), and the University of Minho (Portugal). Over the past two decades, Crespilho has led research projects across multiple scientific fronts, with notable contributions to the development of implantable biochips, bio-batteries, and the conceptualization of Three-Dimensional Catalysis, published in Nature Communications. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led a rapid-response initiative in molecular diagnostics, with national impact and transdisciplinary collaborations. Beyond his scientific work, he has played an active role in mentoring and training the next generation of researchers, having supervised more than 60 undergraduate and graduate students. He is the author of scientific books and holds patents in the fields of bioelectronics and diagnostics. His work has been recognized with several national and international awards, including the Kurt Politzer Innovation Award and the Electrochimica Acta Travel Award for Young Electrochemists, granted by the International Society of Electrochemistry. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles, which have received more than 5,000 citations. Crespilho was named among the top 2 most influential scientists in the world, according to a ranking by Stanford University (USA), reflecting the lasting impact of his contributions to science and technolog (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
