Graduated (1988) in history from the Federal University of Ouro Preto, he has a master's degree (1994) and a doctorate (2001) in social history from USP. Author of didactic and paradidactic books on history, he organized the edition of "Cartas chilenas", by Tomás Antônio Gonzaga (Companhia das Letras). His master's dissertation, "A republic of readers: history and memory at the reception of 'Cartas chilenas' (1845-1989)", published by Hucitec, received the Moinho Santista Juventude Award 1996 (today Bunge Juventude Award) and Jabuti Award 1997 (category: Essay and Biography). He was editor of literature and essay at Globo Livros (2001-2010), division of Editora Globo S/A, and of the literary labels Tordesilhas and Tordesilhinhas (2010-2012). In 2019, with Denilson Soares Cordeiro, he organized and published the book "Arte da aula" (Edições Sesc São Paulo).
