Graduated in Medicine (1997), earned a PhD in Clinical Medicine (2003) from the Ribeirão Preto Medical School of the University of São Paulo (FMRP-USP), and specialized as a hematologist and hemotherapist (2001) at the Hospital das Clínicas of FMRP-USP. He completed postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, where he also worked as a Staff Scientist in the Hematology Branch until 2011.His research interests focus on the mechanisms underlying hematopoietic stem cell failure and on new forms of treatment, including immunotherapies and advanced cell therapies. He was the first to describe mutations in the telomerase gene in human diseases, specifically aplastic anemia and acute leukemia, as a predisposing factor. He demonstrated how hormones can regulate telomerase activity and be used as a treatment. He also demonstrated how telomere shortening can cause liver disease and clonal hematopoiesis.He served as Chair of the Subcommittee on Emerging Gene and Cell Therapies of the American Society of Hematology (2021). He also served as coordinator of Medicine II at Capes and coordinator of Health Area I at Fapesp. He was Pro-Rector for Graduate Studies at the University of São Paulo from 2023 to 2026. He is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Ribeirão Preto Blood Center Foundation and President of the Scientific Council of the Institut Pasteur of São Paulo. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
