Luis Enrique Sánchez

Luis Enrique Sánchez, Full Professor at University of São Paulo, holds a degree in Mining Engineering and a Bachelor degree in Geography, both from the University of São Paulo (respectively in 1980 and 1984). He obtained a master degree in Techniques Minières (mining techniques) from École des Mines de Nancy, France (1985) and a Ph.D. in Economics of Natural Resources and Development from École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris (now part of Paris Tech) in 1989. His research interests include environmental impact assessment, environmental management, environmental and social impacts of mining, sustainability in the extractive industries and land rehabilitation. In 2009 he was Visiting Fellow at the School of Environmental Sciences, Murdoch University, Australia and Visiting Fellow in the summer 2017-18. In the summer 2019-20 he was Visiting Academic at the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences of The University of Queensland. In 1996-97 he was Visiting Lecturer at the Department of Geography, University of Montreal, Canada. He is a fellow of Lead - Leadership for Environment and Development and a member of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA), having acted as Director (1998-2001) and President (2012-13). Since September 2017 he is member of the "Rio Doce Independent Technical and Scientfic Advisory Panel" of IUCN-International Union for Conservation of Nature. He co-edits book reviews for the journal Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal and is associate editor of the journal Cleaner Production Letters.
