Coordinates the Institute for Advanced Studies (IdEA) at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and is a Professor in the area of Operations Research of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UNICAMP, in são Paulo, Brazil. He was born in 1951 in Recife (Pernambuco, Brazil), finished high school as an AFS exchange student in Philadelphia (PA), in 1970. He received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Pernambuco, in 1975, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from UNICAMP, in 1979 and 1984, respectively. Following a brief career with the Power Company of the São Francisco River, he joined the Faculty of UNICAMP in 1978, where he has served as head of the Departmente of Systems Engineering, Director of Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering, Dean of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, member of the Editorial Board of UNICAMP Press, member of the council of PENSES (thinking tank attached to the President's Office) and member of the Board of Trustees of the University. He coordinates the Laboratory for Energy Network Optimization (LABORE), with research interests in the planning, operation and sustainability of energy networks. In 2016 he received the "Zeferino Vaz" award, given by the University of Campinas for outstanding contributions in in teaching, research and service. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
