Birthplace: Brazil

I completed my PhD in Biological Sciences (Biology-Genetics) at the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1991. I have worked at São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP) since 1989 and am currently a Full Professor. I am also a Research Associate at the National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institute (USA), and the National Institute of Biodiversity (Ecuador). I am a reviewer for several scientific foundations and journals and an Assistant Editor for Scientific Reports, Frontier in Genetics, Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, the Journal of Animal Diversity, and Neotropical Ichthyology. I am currently a member of the CNPq Advisory Committee in Genetics (CA-GE), subfield of Animal Genetics. I have published over 500 articles in specialized journals, several book chapters, and four books. I have participated in several undergraduate courses in Cellular and Molecular Biology and graduate programs in Genetics and Zoology. I have worked with fish for the past 35 years, conducting research in various fields such as cytogenetics (chromosomes), population genetics, systematics, taxonomy, biogeography, ecology, and evolutionary biology. The main focus of my research is fish biodiversity in the Neotropics, and to this end, I have worked with many friends around the world to investigate this biodiversity and, especially, to study its origin and maintenance.
