Stéphan Schaub holds degrees in music performance (percussion), music composition, mathematics (University of Arizona, USA) and musicology (EHESS and Sorbonne University, France). His early research focused on the implication of mathematical formalization in the compositional processes and in the analysis of music from the past century, with a particular emphasis on the rhythmic / sound dimensions of music. Starting form in-deeps studies of the theoretical and musical outputs of composers Iannis Xenakis and Milton Babbitt, his research now encompasses a larger repertoire and includes concerns about the methodology and epistemology of music analysis, the application of digital technology in the study of music and the development of means to guide open/improvised performances. Since 2016, he is researcher (careira Pq C) at the « Núcleo Interdisciplinar de comunicação sonora » (NICS) of the São Paulo State University at Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil.
