B.Sc. in Animal Science - University of São Paulo. PhD in Medical Physiopathology - State University of Campinas, with research training at University of Oxford, UK. Post-doctoral researcher at University of São Paulo. Sabbatical period at University of Cambridge, UK. Currently is Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics and Evolution, Federal University of São Carlos. Our research is focused on understanding factors regulating female fertility in mammals, with an emphasis on the role of mitochondria in determining oocyte quality and leading to health embryos and offspring. Specifically, we are working to (i) characterize mitochondrial function and dynamics during oocyte formation and how it connects to female fertility; (ii) determine how oocyte mitochondria contribute to abnormalities in offspring in cases of mothers with diseases such as obesity and other metabolic disorders; (iii) unravel the mechanisms shaping mitochondrial inheritance and develop new tools to enable mitochondrial DNA editing in oocytes and embryos and modulation of mitochondrial DNA inheritance during mother-to-offspring transmission.
