Rafael is the Principal Investigator at the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC) laboratory at the University of North Carolina, where he is an Associate Professor at the School of Pharmacy. Trained in biochemistry and protein crystallography, Rafael obtained his PhD from Rice University (TX-USA) in 2005 and has worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the USA, New Zealand, and Australia. In 2015, he joined the SGC laboratory at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), São Paulo, Brazil, where he served as Chief Scientist between 2018 and 2020. Since 2018, he has been a collaborator and Principal Investigator at the Center for Medicinal Chemistry (CQMED) at UNICAMP. Rafael's main scientific interests are: 1) identifying and validating potential therapeutic targets for proteins related to human diseases; and 2) utilizing tools of chemical biology to elucidate the function of poorly studied proteins. At SGC-UNC, Rafael leads efforts to identify hits for human and viral proteins using DNA-encoded libraries (DEL) in combination with machine learning. (Source: Lattes Curriculum)
