Mariana Boscariol holds a PhD in History from NOVA University Lisbon (2018) and an MA from the Department of Oriental Languages of the University of São Paulo (2013). Most of her research has focused on the early modern missions, with an emphasis on the Jesuit activity in Brazil and Japan during the 16th and 17th centuries. After working as visiting researcher at Aichi Prefectural University (Japan) and as a research associate at the University of Manchester (UK), she is currently a junior researcher at NOVA FCSH (2022). As a full researcher at CHAM, she collaborates with the UNESCO Chair "The Cultural Heritage of the Oceans" and with the ERC Synergy research project "4-OCEANS: Human History of Marine Life". Seeking to explore other aspects of the global history of the Portuguese empire in the Early Modern/Modern period, her main research interests are cross-cultural, environmental and economic history, studying categories such as governance, trade, borders and circulation in East Asia and Brazil.
