Birthplace: Brazil

Jailton de Souza-Ferrari was born and raised in the southwest of Bahia (Brazilian Northeast). His academic and scientific training began at the State University of Southwest Bahia (UESB), where he completed his graduation degree in Sciences-Chemistry (2000). After teaching at the high school level for a short period of time (20002001), he continued his studies in Organic Chemistry at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). In 2007, he completed his D.Sc. working on the investigation of new methodologies for the synthesis of 2-pyridones and their bicyclic derivatives, indolizidinones and quinolizidinones, under the supervision of Professor Silvio Cunha. After finishing his D.Sc., he went to Campinas (Brazilian Southeast) for postdoctoral studies under the guidance of Professor Carlos Roque D. Correia at the Campinas State University (UNICAMP) in the application of the Heck-Matsuda reaction in the synthesis of arylpirroles and chiral 4-aryldehydroproline derivatives. In 2010, after leaving Correias research group, he joined the faculty at the Department of Chemistry of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) in João Pessoa (Brazilian Northeast) to pursue an independent academic research career as an Assistant Professor, and in 2020 he was promoted to Associate Professor. Nowadays, he lectures Organic Chemistry, and his current research interests include mainly the development of new tools (reagents, ligands, and metallic complexes based on Meldrum acid; Melen- and Melophen-type compounds) for sustainable chemical synthesis, as well as the preparation of novel bioactive hemisynthetic derivatives from various natural products via transition-metal catalysis.
